Maya Hirschman

CHAIR OF EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Maya Hirschman has been working in museums large and small across Canada for close to 30 years. She is the curator of the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defence, a position she’s been enjoying since July 2024. She is finishing a PhD at the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Information and aims to defend her thesis this coming winter. Her area of research is focused on the way museums create spaces for communities—especially older veterans—to volunteer, remember and write history, and to care for each other. Previously, Maya was the Curator and Manager of the Secrets of Radar Museum in London, Ontario, where her interest in military and radar history began. In June 2024, Maya was one of 12 students selected to participate in the bursary-funded Canadian Battlefields Foundation Battlefield Tour and travelled to significant Canadian military sites and cemeteries in Britain, Belgium, and France. In 2017, she received the Canada 150 Award from Member of Parliament Irene Mathyssen for her museum work with veterans and marginalised groups in London. When she’s not at the museum or working on her thesis, she enjoys spending quality time with her 20-year-old cat, hiking and road-tripping, taking photographs, as well as geeky things like board and video games.
